The Matching Set: Three Ways to Wear It

· MAIE

Lace-trim tie-back top and matching skirt set in white

The matching set is the most efficient thing you can buy. It arrives already styled, so it removes a decision on the days you do not want one — and then, worn apart, it behaves like two separate pieces you already own. Most people only ever do the first of those.

One: worn as intended

The obvious version, and the reason to buy a set in the first place. Two pieces cut from the same cloth read as a considered outfit in a way that two similar pieces never quite do.

The only rule is not to interrupt it. A set does the work of a whole look, so what you add should be minimal — a bag, a shoe, and nothing competing in between. Knit sets are the easiest entry point; blazer sets the sharpest.

Two: split apart

This is where the value is. The top half of a skirt set works over a slip dress or with jeans. The bottom half of a trouser set is simply a well-cut trouser — wear it with a shirt and nobody knows it came as a pair.

The trick is to break the match deliberately rather than accidentally. Pair one half with something clearly different in texture, so it reads as a choice: a knit half with tailoring, a tailored half with something soft.

Three: layered over

A set is a base, not a finished thing. A long coat over a matched knit set turns it into an outfit for the street rather than the sofa. A leather-look jacket over a shorts set does the same in the other direction.

Because the set underneath is already coherent, almost any single layer over the top works. This is the version that gets a summer set through autumn.

Which set to start with

  • Most wearable: a knit set. It behaves like loungewear and looks like it was planned.
  • Most useful for work: a blazer set — both halves earn their place in the workwear rotation.
  • Most versatile split: a trouser set, because a good trouser is never wasted.

Common questions

Are matching sets still in style?
They have moved from trend to staple. The co-ord has been a fixture for several seasons now, largely because it solves a real problem rather than being purely decorative.

Can I wear a set to a wedding?
A tailored or satin-finish set is a genuine alternative to a dress, particularly for a daytime ceremony. It also splits into two pieces you will wear again, which a dress rarely does. See also our winter wedding guide.

How do I stop a set looking like a uniform?
Change one texture. A structured jacket over a soft knit set, or a soft knit over a tailored one, breaks the flatness immediately.

The full range is in matching sets — knit, skirt, shorts, trouser, blazer and two-piece. By colour and occasion: black two piece sets, white two piece sets, going out sets and maxi skirt sets.
