A dress is the fastest outfit you own, right up until the temperature drops. Here is how to keep wearing the ones you already have, straight through to December.
The short version: Styling a dress for fall comes down to three moves. Add one warm texture above and one below. Never let your coat hem land in the same place as your dress hem. And close the gap between hem and shoe with a boot, a tight or a longer sock. Everything else is preference.
Start with the length, not the dress
Most people pick the dress and then wonder what to put over it. Work the other way round. The hem position decides which layers are available to you, which shoes will work, and whether the whole thing reads like fall or like a summer dress you refused to put away.
Three lengths, three problems. A mini leaves a lot of leg to solve, so it wants a boot or an opaque tight and a coat that stops well above the hem. A midi is the easiest to layer and the hardest to get right, because the hem lands where your calf is widest. A maxi solves the leg entirely and creates a different problem: almost everything you put on top will fight it for attention.

3. The cropped trench

Over a maxi, a full-length coat is the only thing that works. Anything shorter cuts the column of the dress and makes both pieces look accidental. Leave it open so a line of the dress shows down the front, and the two read as one outfit rather than two.
