What Do You Wear Over a Dress When It's Cold?
· MAIE Editorial
The most common styling question of the season, answered properly. One rule covers ninety percent of it.
Match the coat length to the dress length, but never make them equal. A cropped coat over a long dress, or a long coat over a short one. Hems that finish in the same place flatten the outfit and no amount of styling fixes it. Over a knit dress a cropped trench is the most useful layer; over a maxi, only a full-length coat works.
Why the rule works
Every horizontal line across your body is a place the eye stops. A dress hem is one. A coat hem is another. When they land together you create one thick band across the leg, and the whole silhouette reads shorter and wider than it is. Separate them and the eye travels instead of stopping, which is what makes an outfit look long.
That is the entire principle. Everything below is just applying it to the four dress lengths you actually own.
Over a mini dress
You have the most freedom here, because almost any coat length is different from the dress. The strongest option is a long coat: it turns a short dress into a column and leaves only the leg showing below. The second is a cropped trench, which keeps the mini fully visible and reads younger.
What to avoid is a mid-thigh jacket. It ends within a few centimeters of the hem and creates exactly the band described above.
Coats that work over a mini
Over a midi dress
The hardest length, because a midi hem already sits at the widest point of the calf. A cropped coat is the safest answer: it stops at the waist, well clear of the hem, and lets the dress keep its shape. A full-length coat also works, provided it is genuinely longer than the dress and not a near match.
Add a boot that meets or passes the hem and the midi stops being difficult.
Cropped over a midi
Over a maxi dress
One answer only. A full-length coat, worn open, with a strip of the dress showing down the front. A short jacket over a maxi cuts the dress at the waist and makes it look like a skirt and top that do not match.
The open front matters more than people think. Belted closed over a maxi, a long coat hides the dress entirely and you have effectively worn a coat.

Over a knit dress
A knit dress is already a warm layer, so what goes over it is about shape rather than temperature. A cropped trench is the best partner: structure against softness, and a waist created where the knit has none. A blazer does the same job with sharper shoulders. Avoid a second knit on top, because two soft textures together lose all definition.

What about a cardigan?
A cardigan counts as a layer, not a coat, and the hem rule applies to it just as strictly. Cropped cardigans over a midi or maxi. Long cardigans over a mini. A hip-length cardigan over a hip-length dress is the same mistake in softer material.

Frequently asked
What is the best coat to wear over a dress?
A cropped trench for a midi or a knit dress, and a full-length coat for a maxi or a mini. The single rule is that the coat hem must not land in the same place as the dress hem. Buy for length before you buy for color or fabric.
Can you wear a short jacket over a long dress?
Only if the jacket is genuinely cropped, ending at or above the natural waist. A cropped jacket over a maxi reads deliberate. A hip-length or mid-thigh jacket over the same dress cuts it in half and makes the outfit look unplanned.
What do you wear over a dress to a wedding in the fall?
A long coat you can hand over at the door, or a tailored blazer if the venue is warm. Avoid anything heavy at the shoulder if the dress has detail there. A belted full-length trench works over most evening maxis without competing with them.
Is it warm enough to wear a dress in winter?
With opaque tights, a knee-high boot and a proper coat, yes. The gap between hem and shoe is where the cold gets in, so closing it matters more than the weight of the dress itself. A knit dress with tights is warmer than most trouser outfits.
